Why Is My Printer Printing Blank Pages? Causes and Fixes

Direct answer: A laser printer or copier that feeds paper but prints nothing is usually caused by one of five things: the protective sealing tape left on a new toner cartridge, an empty or poorly seated toner cartridge, a drum unit that is not installed or not making contact, a blank or wrongly scaled print job, or a fault in the transfer roller or laser unit. Start with the cartridge and drum, then print an internal test page. If the test page is also blank, the problem is in the printer, not the computer.

Blank pages are confusing because the printer seems to work. It wakes up, pulls in paper and pushes it out, but the page is empty. In busy offices, schools and clinics this wastes paper and time, and it often happens right after someone has changed a toner cartridge. Most causes are quick to check. This guide covers monochrome and colour laser printers and multifunction copiers (MFPs), and helps office admins and IT teams decide between a simple fix, a new consumable or a technician visit.

What causes a printer to print blank pages?

Use this table to match what you see with the most likely cause.

What you see Most likely cause First thing to try
Blank pages right after installing a new toner cartridge Sealing tape or shipping lock still on the cartridge Remove the cartridge and pull out any tape, clip or orange cover
Pages got lighter over several days, then went blank Toner cartridge empty Check the toner level on the control panel and replace the cartridge
Blank pages after moving the printer or clearing a jam Toner or drum unit not seated correctly Remove and reinstall the toner and drum until they click into place
Internal test page prints fine, but jobs from one PC are blank Wrong driver, blank page in the file or scaling issue Print a different file, reinstall the correct driver and check page settings
Copies are blank, but prints from the computer are fine Original placed face up, or scanner not reading Check the document direction on the glass or feeder
Test page is also blank, with a good toner and drum Transfer roller, high-voltage board or laser unit fault Contact a technician

Did you remove the sealing tape from the new cartridge?

This is the most common cause in offices. Many new toner cartridges ship with a long plastic sealing strip, a protective cover over the drum, or a coloured plastic clip that stops toner from moving during transport. If any of these stay on, no toner reaches the page and the output is completely white.

Take the cartridge out and check for tape, pull tabs, orange or yellow plastic parts and foam. Follow the instructions printed on the box, as each model is different. Gently rock the cartridge from side to side a few times to spread the toner, then reinstall it.

Is the toner cartridge empty or not seated properly?

An empty cartridge usually gives a warning first: pages get faded, then very pale, then blank. If you saw that pattern, see our guide on why a printer prints faded pages and replace the cartridge.

If the cartridge is new or still shows toner, it may not be making contact. Remove it, check that the metal contacts and the chip are clean, and push it back in firmly until it locks. If the printer also shows a cartridge error, confirm that the cartridge code matches your printer model exactly. A cartridge made for a similar model can fit but still not work.

Could the drum unit be the problem?

On printers with a separate drum unit (drum), the toner forms an image on the drum and is then transferred to the paper. If the drum is missing, not locked into place, or has a broken gear or contact, the printer can run through a full print cycle and still leave the page blank.

  • Check that the drum unit is installed and that the toner cartridge is locked into it.
  • Look for a protective sheet or cover on a new drum, and remove it.
  • Do not touch the green or blue drum surface, as fingerprints and scratches cause new print faults.

If the drum is old and you have also seen faded or spotted pages, read the signs your copier drum unit needs replacement.

Is the problem in the computer or in the printer?

Print an internal test page or configuration page from the printer's control panel. This page comes from the printer itself, so it removes the computer, network and driver from the test.

  • Test page prints normally: the printer is fine. The problem is the file, the driver or the print settings.
  • Test page is blank: the problem is inside the printer. Check the toner, drum and sealing tape again, then call a technician.

For software causes, check that the document is not blank at the end (for example, an extra empty page in a spreadsheet or report), that the correct driver for your exact model is installed, and that the page size matches the paper in the tray. Also try printing the same file from another computer.

Why are my copies blank when prints are fine?

On a multifunction copier, blank copies with normal prints almost always point to how the original was placed. On the flatbed glass, most machines need the original face down. In the automatic document feeder (ADF), most need it face up. Check the small symbol near the glass or feeder. If the direction is correct and copies are still blank, the scanner lamp or sensor may need service.

How do I fix blank pages step by step?

  1. Cancel all waiting jobs and restart the printer.
  2. Remove the toner cartridge and check for sealing tape, clips or covers.
  3. Gently rock the cartridge and reinstall it firmly.
  4. Check that the drum unit is installed, locked and free of protective covers.
  5. Check the toner level on the control panel.
  6. Print an internal test page from the printer.
  7. If the test page prints, reinstall the correct driver and test another file.
  8. If the test page is blank with a known-good toner and drum, contact a technician.

When should I call a technician?

Call a technician if the internal test page is blank after you have confirmed the toner and drum are good, if the printer shows a laser, high-voltage or transfer error code, or if the problem started after a strong electrical surge. These faults involve the transfer roller, high-voltage power supply or laser scanner unit, and should not be opened by untrained users. Our guide to what the toner, drum, developer, fuser and transfer belt each do explains how these parts work together.

How can offices prevent blank pages?

  • Keep a short checklist inside the printer room on how to unpack new toner cartridges.
  • Store spare cartridges sealed, flat and away from heat. See our tips on storing toner cartridges in Saudi Arabia's hot climate.
  • Replace toner as soon as pages start to fade, instead of running cartridges to empty.
  • Buy cartridges from a reliable supplier, whether original or compatible. Our guide on how to avoid low-quality compatible toner cartridges explains what to check.
  • Keep a record of faults per machine, so recurring problems reach a technician early.

FAQ

Why is my printer printing blank pages after I changed the toner?

The most likely cause is the sealing tape, plastic clip or protective cover still on the new cartridge. Remove the cartridge, take off all packing parts, rock it gently and reinstall it firmly.

Can a bad drum unit cause blank pages?

Yes. If the drum unit is missing, not locked into place, or has a broken gear or contact, toner cannot be transferred to the paper, and the page comes out blank.

Why does my printer print blank pages from one computer only?

If the printer's internal test page is normal, the cause is on that computer. Reinstall the correct driver for your exact model, check the page size and scaling, and make sure the file does not contain empty pages.

Is it worth repairing a printer that prints blank pages?

Most cases are fixed with a new or correctly installed toner cartridge or drum unit. If a technician finds a laser or high-voltage board fault, compare the repair cost with the age and value of the printer before deciding.
