How to Fix Paper Jam in HP LaserJet Printers — Step-by-Step Guide for Saudi Arabia

Paper jams are the most common HP LaserJet issue reported at S-Tech's service desk in Jeddah. Fortunately, most paper jams can be resolved in under 5 minutes without calling a technician. This guide walks you through every HP LaserJet jam location and how to clear it safely.

Before You Start: Safety First

Turn off the printer and unplug it before reaching inside. The fuser unit runs at 180–200°C during operation and retains heat for several minutes after shutdown. Never pull jammed paper forcefully — torn fragments inside the printer cause secondary jams and can damage the fuser.

Step 1: Identify the Jam Location

HP LaserJet printers display a jam location code on the control panel:

  • 13.A1 / 13.A2 — Jam in Tray 1 or Tray 2 (input area)
  • 13.B — Jam in the fuser/output area
  • 13.D — Jam in the duplexer (double-sided unit)
  • 13.E — Jam in the output bin

Step 2: Clear a Tray 1/Tray 2 Input Jam

  1. Remove all paper from the tray.
  2. Grip the jammed paper with both hands and pull slowly toward you — never upward or sideways.
  3. If the paper tears, open the front access panel to retrieve the fragment from inside.
  4. Check for small paper scraps by shining a light inside the paper path.
  5. Reload the tray with fresh, flat paper and test print.

Step 3: Clear a Fuser/Output Area Jam

  1. Wait 10 minutes after turning off — the fuser is extremely hot.
  2. Open the rear access door (on most HP LaserJet models).
  3. Pull the jammed paper straight down and out — do not pull upward as this drags paper against the fuser rollers.
  4. Close the door firmly and power on.

Common Causes of Repeated Paper Jams in Saudi Arabia

In KSA's climate, the most frequent jam causes are:

  • Humidity damage: Paper stored in non-air-conditioned warehouses absorbs moisture, causing feed issues. Always store paper in sealed reams.
  • Worn pickup rollers: After 100,000+ pages, pickup rollers slip and misfeed. These are available as spare parts from S-Tech — see our printer spare parts collection.
  • Wrong paper weight: HP LaserJet printers are optimised for 75–90gsm paper. Using 120gsm+ paper causes fuser jams.
  • Overfilled trays: Never fill beyond the max line marker.
